Back in the day
I just found this previously unpublished post. I wrote it about 4 years ago. What a noggin I was back then! I like to think I'm more of a stud these days...
blogging time.
i was in a facebook conversation yday and the subject of character building came up. the question was asked; "is my character not yet built?"
but that question is not the point. i've decided to explore the concept of character building.
i have almost signed on as an apprentice builder, so i now know perhaps more than you about the subject. not to worry, though. I am in the process of informing you.
Building starts with a block of land. in this case, the block is you.
before we proceed, do you object to being likened to a block of land? if you think it is wrong that i am similiing you to some dirt, with perhaps some grass or thistles covering it, then go home. i don't want you to read this. you are a lump of dirt, amongst other lumps of dirt so get over it.
moving on.
we are going to skip through the council approval stage. i don't like that stage. basically no one worries about that anymore anyway. it's all about parentage and school teachers. this is a major time wasting stage, and is guaranteed to cost money. i'm over it.
so we need a foundation for this character. the old fashioned theory is to have two parentals who stick together for the whole of the building process. in a high percentage of cases this will make for you a foundation that is sound. but maybe boring. and it could be riddled with cracks. hey, i'm not even apprentice yet. i can't guarantee anything!
other parental situations may result in other kinds of foundation, or slab, as i'd like to begin calling it. if your parentals have a kind of rotational roster, then your slab will most likely be on a hill in a landslip zone. good luck. many houses are built in places like these. the view is often good.
